Another tradition from our grandmother: we hand bake & build our gingerbread houses each year!
Y’all, we can’t believe it, but another set of Gingerbread House classes is coming up, and we are so excited! We wanted to share how these classes came to be and why they are so dear to us.
Our entire childhood, we would spend hours making gingerbread cookies with our grandmother. She had a specific recipe she followed (to be shared in our next Creative Club newsletter!), which was quick and fail-proof. We’re not saying it’s homemade or healthy, but easy and yummy? Absolutely. She had a huge collection of metal cookie cutters, including gingerbread people, that she had gathered over the years. We would obsess over which ones to use because certain shapes meant more icing, and everyone knows the icing amount matters. The gingerbread girls with their skirts, the Christmas trees, and the stars quickly rose to the top of the list because of the amount of icing, but also because we could have more fun with the designs. We kept up this tradition with our grandmother all the way into our twenties. Now that we have families of our own, we make them at our houses and always make sure our amazing 92-year-old grandmother gets a good batch.
It is this recipe and these memories that led us to create our Gingerbread Classes eight years ago. We ordered some classic metal cookie cutters to cut out each wall and roof of these houses and spent an entire day baking and putting together those first houses while we watched Christmas movies and listened to Christmas music. We learned a LOT and only had a few sisterly arguments during the whole day! Those first classes were adorable and sparked such joy that we have hosted them every single year since, including the infamous year of 2020. We now have it down to a science: Leighton does all of the baking, and Emma does all of the building. We know which icing mix to use, we know where to score the best candies, and most importantly, we know how much time to set aside so it’s a fun couple of days and not stressful.
This year, we’re adding some NEW options, and we couldn’t be more excited. In addition to our family-focused classes for 3yr olds and up, we are going to have an Adult Class, which will have a more elevated structure to work on, AND a tween/teen class where they can explore more icing techniques. We will even host some of these classes in East Nashville at our fav spot, The Getalong. This year, we will basically be committed to an entire week of gingerbread fun, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Come celebrate the holidays with us in our traditional class or in any of our other fabulous holiday-related classes coming up!
