Carve It Out: Sarah Bogdal on the Art of Linocut
Meet Sarah Bogdal of @spaghetti_bolognese, a local art teacher who’s making it easier (and way more fun) for adults to get creative with some seriously cool art classes.
Sarah is a Nashville printmaker whose detailed linocut prints celebrate the city's parks, buildings, and a few favorite creatures (jellyfish and rats included).
Sarah is joining us at Little Art House this November for a 3-week Linocut 101 Series for adults! Over three classes you’ll draw, transfer, carve, and print your own design, leaving with your carved block, three prints, and all class resources. No experience needed, just curiosity and a love of making!
What exactly is linocut?
Don’t let the technical skills intimidate you! Sarah describes linocut as accessible, forgiving, and lots of fun whether you’re a professional artist, a hobbyist, or someone who doesn’t consider themselves creative at all!
Think First, Carve Freely
Sarah makes all her design decisions before carving begins: sketching, refining in Photoshop, and transferring by hand. Once carving starts, she doesn’t want to think about the content anymore. The thinking happens first, then it’s time to get out of your own way!
Fun fact: Sarah’s favorite part of the process is carving!
Teaching at Little Art House
Welcome to the Cult of Print
Sarah calls her workshops “the cult of print,” and once people try it, they’re hooked. Even better? According to her, “Everything you hate about your drawing skills disappears when you translate it to linocut.” Consider yourself recruited!
A Space to Create Without the Pressure
Sarah believes what stops most people from making art is comparing themselves to others and expecting perfection. Small, critique-free workshops are the antidote and we couldn’t agree more!
Three Weeks, One Block, Three Prints
Over three weeks, Sarah guides you from sketching and practice carving to carving your final design and pulling your first print. No need to rush, everyone has time to finish and takes home their prints!
Sarah hopes you’ll fall in love with linocut and keep printing for yourself and loved ones. At the very least, you’ll leave with a new appreciation for the medium and the fun of making something by hand.
We couldn’t agree more! We hope you will join us for Sarah’s upcoming Linocut 101 Series taking place in Nov at our Hillsboro Village Studio.
A Little More About Sarah:
Her work has traveled from Nashville to galleries, festivals, and art shows across the country.
After winning Best in Show at New Appalachia, Sarah returned as a visiting artist in 2026 for her prize: a solo exhibition!
Her work has been shown in 16 states, but Cookeville, TN, has been a standout for its love of printmaking.
