STEAM Fest is here!
We are so excited to be part of the Tennessee STEAM Festival this October (9–25!) but around here, STEAM doesn't just show up once a year. It's woven into everything we do!
One of our favorite parts of planning is making age-appropriate connections. In all of our regular art classes and camps for 1yr–3rd graders, we seamlessly integrate concepts from other subject areas, such as counting or reading, at different times. Sometimes there’s a natural connection, like with the book we read. Other times it happens while we’re playing with sensory bins or playdough, or during the project itself.
Beyond that, there are so many ways we intentionally plan cross-subject content with STEAM, such as measuring (math), cause and effect with materials (science), or building and constructing with sculpture (engineering). We intentionally don’t use much technology in our classes, but we do use it occasionally with our more advanced classes in areas such as digital design.
In the past, we’ve even partnered with other companies to host collaborative classes, like science and art with The Science Guys, and dance and art with Tippi Toes. While those classes come and go, we believe incorporating a variety of subject areas the way STEAM does is an essential part of well-rounded learning and creative development. Learning doesn’t have to be boring or measured. Our favorite part is when kids (and sometimes parents) don’t even realize it’s happening!
Our years of experience in traditional classrooms as well as in our own studios have only deepened our belief in what we do. From the way we naturally weave STEAM into our projects, to the balance we strike between structure and creative freedom, to the real-world skills students walk away with, we’ve seen firsthand how impactful art education can be.
