Mae Mae Sees the World is a sweet little story about a lamb who goes out to explore what’s beyond the farm she calls home and sees many of the world’s monuments. Ultimately, she finds a friend in a new land who is totally different and yet very similar to her.
Growing up, if I couldn’t sleep, my mom always helped me feel calmer with visual cues and imagination. She would say things like “imagine what colors and patterns to put on easter eggs” or “what do you want to put on your valentine’s cards?” Years later I leaned into dreaming and creating to help me cope when my best friend from college passed away a few years after graduation. The result is this little book.

This story combines a love of travel and history from my grandmother, pure imagination and creativity from my mother, and the comfort I found when I made friends with Mary Ellen, the original Mae Mae. The characters are also inspired by my little teacup poodle, Charlotte (AKA Char Char), who was another source of comfort during that time.
Bringing this book to life has been a labor of love, a practice in patience and a reminder of how powerful creativity is for healing. For anyone going through a tough time, try to remember to be patient with yourself, look for even the tiniest or silliest things to dream about and know you can move through it.
